Raw Ruby - The Stone of Health and Wisdom

For thousands of years, Rubies have been valued highly for their beauty, strength, and rarity. Bringing health, wisdom, peace, prosperity, and love.

News Content:
During the 13th century in India many believed that the ruby had many medicinal powers, such as healing digestive disorders, and many other cultures believed that wearing rubies brought health, wisdom, peace, prosperity, and love. Other cultures such as the Burmese even thought that rubies ripened. As the ruby matured they believed it became more red, and flawed rubies were thought to be too mature.

Ruby's coveted red color ranges from medium red to dark orangey red to purplish red. A ruby is translucent mineral corundum. There are many types of colored corundum; reds are known as ruby, the rest are known as sapphires. The ruby is very highly valued in all parts of the world.

The ruby is the oldest or first known of all precious stones, dating far back in the early history of Babylonia. The finest specimens, as well as the largest quantities, are found in Upper Burma, and at the present time over one-half of the world’s supply comes from this locality. The rubies found in Ceylon, Siam and Australia have not the deep rich color of the Burmese ruby, which is a shade of red slightly inclined to the purple.

Both rubies and sapphires are composed of the mineral corundum. Since corundum is a colorless mineral, for a ruby to have its color there must be slight traces of chromium in the gemstone. Also, even though diamond is the hardest mineral, ranking a ten on the Moh's scale, ruby closely follows with a nine and therefore is known as the second strongest mineral. The word ruby comes from the Latin word Rubeus which means red.

It is written that wisdom is "more precious than rubies," that is to say very valuable indeed. In the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or "king of precious stones" and ratnanayaka, "leader of precious stones."

Today, the ruby is still considered one of the most valuable and beautiful of the precious stones. Artisans of fine jewelry throughout the world continue to utilize this fine gem in their creations.
